19. Jesus’ Directives to His Followers (continued) (Ep 46)

Jesus’ supreme requirement for those who choose to take his way was “Follow me.” The directives listed here and in the previous episode make clear Jesus’ directions for his true followers and provide us with guidelines for actions and reactions to the many and varied situations we face in life. Many of these directives are wonderful guides that may be easily memorized and frequently affirmed to help us live a better and happier life. For example, here are a few of my favorite guidelines and affirmations: “Fear not.” “Be of good cheer.” “Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” “Rejoice and be exceedingly glad.” “Abide in my love.” “Abide in me and I in you” “Seek first the kingdom of God.” “Judge not.” “Love one another.” “Love your enemies.” “Bless those who curse you.” “Be you perfect.” “As you wish that men would do to you, do you also to them.”
Following are the second half of this listing of Jesus’ directives to his followers:
And behold, a lawyer stood up to put Jesus to the
test, saying “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit.
eternal life?”
Jesus said to him, “What is written in the
law? How do you read [the scriptures]?”
And he answered, “You shall love the
Lord your God with all your heart, and with
all your soul, and with all your strength, and
with all your mind, and your neighbor
as yourself.”
And Jesus said to him, “You have answered
right; do this, and you will live.” Lk 10:25-28
Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which
is hypocrisy. Lk 12:1
do not fear those who kill the body, and after
that have no more that they can do. Lk 12:4
And when they bring you before the synagogues
and before the rulers and the authorities, be not
anxious how or what you are to answer or what
you are to say; for the spirit will teach you in
that very hour what you ought to say. Lk 12:11-12
Take heed, and beware of all covetousness; for
a man’s life does not consist in the abundance
of his possessions. Lk 12:15
Do not be anxious about your life, what you
shall eat or drink, nor about your body, what
you shall put on. Life is more than food, and
the body more than clothing. Lk 12:22-23
Consider the lilies, how they grow; they toil
not, neither do they spin; yet I say to you,
even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed
like one of these. Lk 12:27
And do not seek what you are to eat and what
you are to drink, nor be of anxious mind. For
all the nations of the world seek these things;
and your Father knows that you need them. Lk 12:29-30
Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things
shall be yours as well. Lk 12: 31
Provide yourselves with purses that wax not
old, where no thief approaches and no moth
destroys. For where your treasure is, there will
your heart be also. Lk 12:32-34
Let your loins be girded and your lamps
burning. And be like men who are waiting for
their master to come home from the marriage
feast, so that they may open to him at once
when he comes and knocks. Lk 12:35-36
And some one said to him, “Lord, will those
who are saved be few or many?”
And Jesus said to them, “Enter by the
narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way
is easy, that leads to destruction, and those
who enter by it are many. Straight is the gate
and narrow is the way, that leads to life, and
those who find it are few. Mt 7:13-14
When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not
always invite your friends or your brothers or
your kinsmen or rich neighbors, lest they
also invite you in return, and you be repaid.
But when you give a feast, sometimes invite
the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind,
and you will be blessed, because they cannot
repay you. Lk 14:12-13
And they were bringing children to him, that
he might touch them; and the disciples rebuked
them. But when Jesus saw it he was indignant,
and said to them, “Suffer the little children to
come unto me, and forbid them not; for of
such is the kingdom of heaven. Truly, I say
to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom
of God like a child shall not enter it.” Mk 10:13-15
And I tell you, make friends for yourselves
with righteousness like those who make
friends with unrighteous mammon, so that
when it fails they may receive you into the
eternal habitations. Lk 16:9
whoever would be great among you must be
your servant, and whoever would be first
among you must be your minister; even as the
Son of Man came not to be served but to serve,
and to give his life in the service of many. Mt 20:25-28
Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s,
and to God the things that are God’s. Mk 12:17
And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a
question, to test him, “Teacher, which is the
greatest commandment in the law?”
Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O
Israel; The Lord our God, the Lord is one;
and you shall love the Lord your God with all
your heart, and with all your soul, and with
all your mind, and with all your strength.‘ Mk 12:29-30
And a second is like it, You shall love your
neighbor as yourself. Mt 22:39
And call no man your father on earth, for you
have one Father, who is in heaven. Mt 23:9
And when they bring you to trial and deliver
you up, do not be anxious beforehand what
you are to say; but say whatever is given you
in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but
the Holy Spirit. Mk 13:11
As he sat on the Mount of Olives the apostles
came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, …
what will be the sign of your coming…?
He answered them, saying, “Then they
will see the Son of Man coming with power
and great glory.”
From the fig tree learn its lesson: as
soon as its branch becomes tender and puts
forth its leaves, you know that summer is
near. So also, when you see these things
taking place, you know that he is near, at the
very gates. Mk 13:28-29
If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed
your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s
feet. For I have given you an example, that
you also should do as I have done to you. Jn 13:14-15
let the greatest among you become as the
youngest, and the leader as one who serves. Lk 22:26
And he took a cup, and when he had given
thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it,
all of you. Do this, as often as you drink it, in
remembrance of me. Mt 26:27
1 Cor 11:25
And he took bread, and when he had
given thanks he broke it and gave it to them,
saying, “This is my body. Do this in
remembrance of me.” Lk 22:19
A new commandment I give to you, that you
love one another even as I have loved you. By
this all men will know that you are my
disciples, if you have love for one another. Jn 13:34-35
This is my commandment, that you love one
another as I have loved you Jn 15:12
This I command you, to love one another. Jn 15:17
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch
cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the
vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. Jn 15:4
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved
you; abide in my love. If you keep my
commandments, you will abide in my love,
just as I have kept my Father’s commandments
and abide in his love.” Jn 15:9-10
Let not your hearts be troubled Jn 14:1
believe in God, believe also in me. Jn 14:1
Believe me that I am in the Father and the
Father in me; or else believe me for the
work’s sake. Jn 14:11
Hitherto you have asked nothing in my name;
ask, and you will receive that your joy may
be full.” Jn 16:24
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you;
not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not
your hearts be troubled, neither let them
be afraid. Jn 14:27
Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus.
Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it. Jesus
said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath;
for they who take the sword will perish by
the sword. Jn 18:10-11
